SMALL INTESTINE

SMALL

                INTESTINE:

The small intestine consist of three parts
1-C shaped Duodenum(25cm long)
2-jejunum(meaning empty, because after death no food is found here.)2.5m long
3-highly coiled ileum(meaning:twisted)3.5m long
Ileum opens into the large intestine.Small intestine is a cheif site for digestion and absorption. The entire small intestine is about 6m long
Two major acessory glands liver and pancreas are associated with duodenum. Duodenum is the shortest region. tiny finger like projection of the  mucosa form numerous villi(meaning:shaggy hair), which are about 0.5-1.5mm in length. Each villus is covered by simple columnar epithelium. It contains a blood capillary network and a lymph capillary called LACTEAL
The JEJUNUM and ILEUM are simila  SMALL INTESTINE:

The JEJUNUM and ILEUM are similar in structure to the duodenum, except that there is a gradually decrease in the diameeter of the small intestine, the thickness of the intestinal wall, the number of circular folds and the number of villi as one progress through the small intestine. The duodenum and jejunum are the major sites of the nutrient absorption
The structural features increases the surface area of small intestine and make it the largest part of the GI TRACT. The internal walls are folded to increase surface area for absorption. villi and microvilli further increase surface area for absorption
The wall of the small intestine is made up of the same layers that makes up the most of the gi tract

The small intestine is not small in length it is small in diameeter. Large intestine is large in diameeter. The small intstine begins at the pyloric spincter of the stomachr in structure to the duodenum, excepy that there is a gradually decrease in the diameter of the small intestine, the thickness of the intestinal wall, the number of circular folds and the number of villi as one progress through the small intestine.
