PEROXISOMES AND GLYOXYSOMES: CELL ORGANALLES

Peroxisomes and glyoxysomes are collectively called MICROBODIES. These are similar to Lysosomes in the sense that they are single membranous, vesicular structure. They originate from golgi complex and they contain enzyme(although different from lysosomes) but they are smaller then lysosomes

PEROXISOMES:

Peroxisomes contain oxidative enzymes that are
1-Peroxidase
2-Catalaze
3-Glycolic acid oxidase

ROLE OF PEROXISOMES IN DETOXIFICATION OF ALCOHOL:

Peroxisomes are abundant in Liver cell where they are specifically involved in the formation and decompostion of hydrogen peroxide so they are named peroxisomes. They are mainly concerned with the detoxification of alcohol. in this activity alcohol is oxidized into hydrogen peroxide with the help of PEROXIDASE enzyme. Hydrogen peroxide is itself a toxic molecule so it immediately change into oxygen and water with the help of CATALAZE enzyme.

ROLE OF PEROXISOMES IN PLANT:

In plant cell, peroxysomes are involved in photorespiration. A step of photorespiration take place in peroxysomes in which glycolate is converted into glycine with the help of GLYCOLC ACID OXYDASES enzyme

GLYOXYSOMES:

OCURANCE:

Glyoxysomes are found at seedling stage in oil seed plants.

FUNCTION:

These organelle have a number of enzymes for lipid metabolism that are not found in animal. Germinating seeds convert stored fatty acid into Carbohydrate. This is achieved through a metabolic pathway called GLYOXYLATE CYCLE. The enzyme of which are located in the glyoxysomes
